Jim Henry Eddings, Jr., was born on April 13, 1933 in Lonewolf, Oklahoma. He was a blessing to his parents Jim Henry & Patsy Eddings. He was the ninth of ten siblings.
The family migrated to Yuma, Arizona in 1935, and his father founded the Rose of Sharon Church of God in Christ. Elder Eddings accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at the age 14 years old during a winter revival. He was filled with the Holy Ghost on December 28, 1948.
After graduation from Yuma Union High School in 1951, Elder Eddings was drafted in the US Army in 1953, where he served as a Conscious Objector. While attending West End COGIC in San Antonio, Texas, he met Wynonia Jean Ricks. They were married on December 18, 1954. They moved to Arizona for a time, then later settled in California. After searching for a church home, they settled at the New Jerusalem COGIC in Compton, California in 1956.
In 1967, Elder Eddings accepted the pastoral call on his life. With an assignment to preach the gospel and equipped with the gift to lead people to Christ, Elder Eddings left New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ with the blessing of his former Pastor J.D. Jones, and he ventured out to fulfill his purpose in life.
With his wife, their seven children, and a few church members, the New Greater Hope Church of God in Christ was born in 1968. New Greater Hope’s humble beginnings were in the Eddings’ home in the City of Carson, California. Elder Eddings believed wholeheartedly in God’s Word. Through prayer and faith they knew that God would open the door for an accommodating place of worship in the future for His people as they remained faithful to God.
The congregation, along with Elder Eddings, continued to pray and believe God. Nine months later, God provided a new location for the ministry at 2615 W. Compton Blvd., Compton, California. As Elder Eddings continued to preach the Word of God, the church family standing by their pastor’s side prayed and believed God for more souls. The ministry continued to grow. On December 1988, God blessed Pastor Eddings and his congregation to move into a beautiful edifice at 1216 S. Wilmington Ave., Compton, California.
After the passing of his first wife, Wynonia Jean in 2007, Pastor Eddings again found love and support with Barbara Ann Bridges. They married on November 6, 2010. Together they worked faithfully and expanded the membership of New Greater Hope Church of God in Christ.
In May 2017, approaching his fiftieth year of pastorship, Elder Eddings, on his sick bed had visions of growth and expansion of New Greater Hope Church to areas surrounding the church. He admonished the members to continue to pursue his vision and continue the work of the ministry.
Our founder, Pastor Jim Henry Eddings, Jr. departed this life on January 16, 2018.
